Kohima, Jul 14 : A herd of wild elephants is wreaking havoc in Nungying village under Wokha district of Nagaland for the past few days, destroying standing paddy cultivation just before the harvesting season.
A statement issued by farmer leader of Nungying village Thunglamo Lotha said a herd of wild elephants has terrorised the villagers around the Doyang Hydro Electric Project and the first attack on the paddy field was at Nungying village recently.
The pachyderms also attacked other horticultural cultivation in the orchards destroying fruits and vegetables.
Villagers are in great fear that the wild elephants may attack the granaries in search of food and even cause damage to human life. The pachyderms have been destroying crops in villages for the last three years leading to heavy losses to farmers.
The farmers appealed to the government to take appropriate and immediate measures to drive away the elephants into deep jungle in the interest of the affected villages.
