Tension prevails three days after fire in Arunachal school

Itanagar, Feb 14 : Three days after the tragic death of 14 school children in a fire at Palin, tension maintained its grip in the area even as a dozen school staff, including the principal, were rescued from the hands of agitated locals.

Anguished parents and relatives of the victims stoned the school immediately after Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu and Education Minister Bosiram Siram left the place on Friday, police said today.

About a dozen teachers and staff, including principal Father Jose, of the Holy Angel Don Bosco School, who were feeling unsafe after the brick-batting, were brought here by a chopper on Friday by NCP MLA Bamang Felix.

"The situation is tense but under control now. Prohibitory orders have been imposed in the area around the school complex in view of the simmering tension," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Palin, Chuku Takar told PTI over phone.

The authorities have closed down the school indefinitely.

Siram said he is chairing a meeting with MP, MLAs and student leaders here tomorrow to look into the demands of the grieving parents to associate names of the victims with the school to keep their memories alive.

"In the new education policy, we will give emphasis on the measures for safety and hygiene of students residing in hostels," he added.
