First Northeast MP Summit at Gangtok

Gangtok view Gangtok, Feb 2 : The North East MPs' Forum (NEMPF) will be holding its first summit in Gangtok on February 12, informed Sikkim Lok Sabha member P D Rai here today.

Mr Rai, who is also the General Secretary of NEMPF and convenor of the proposed summit, in a press statement said, ''The summit is the first of its kind bringing MPs of Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha from the North-east region togehter.'' Out of the total of 39 MPs from the NE region, around 27 to 30 MPs are expected to attend the summit said Mr Rai.

''Sikkim, being the most peaceful state, the theme of the summit 'Ushering in people-centric progress and development through peace', seems apt,'' said the Sikkim MP.

During the summit, the participating MPs would be passing several resolutions.

NEMPF Chairman Mukut Mitti, a Rajya Sabha member, who earlier served as Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh and later as Lt Governor of Pondicherry, has expressed his deep gratitude to Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling for agreeing to host the summit, said Mr Rai.

He has further thanked the peace-loving Sikkimese, who are well known for their hospitality, thereby making Sikkim the leading state in terms of tourism business in the region, said Mr Rai.

On February 13, the participating MPs are scheduled to visit Nathula and a briefing by the Army authorities is also slated on the security and border trade situation.

The resolution, which was passed at the recently concluded meeting of the North East Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in Shillong, will serve as an input for the Gangtok summit.

The Speakers of the Assemblies of Meghalaya and Sikkim are expected to attend this conference as special invitees.
