Guwahati, Feb 15 : Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi has urged railway minister Mamata Banerjee to create a new railway zone exclusively for the North Eastern region.
In a letter to Banerjee recently and made available to the media today, Gogoi urged for inclusion of the proposal in the next railway budget in the interest of the people of the North Eastern region.
One of the major causes of backwardness of the region was lack of connectivity, he said. He also requested her to introduce daily Duronto trains between Guwahati and Delhi, Guwahati and Bangalore and Guwahati and Kolkata.
Besides, Gogoi sought superfast trains between Guwahati-Mumbai via Nagpur (daily) and Guwahati-Goa and Dibrugarh-Trivandrum (both bi-weekly). He also pleaded with the railway minister for electrification of railway lines between Bongaigaon and Kamakhya via Jogighopa and between Guwahati and Dibrugarh.
Double tracking of railways connecting Assam and extending it up to the Guwahati-Tinsukia section, upgradation of New Bongaigaon and Dibrugarh railway workshops for manufacturing coaches and wagons and expeditious implementation of ongoing railway projects were also sought by the chief minister.
