RBI Detects Fraud via SMS, Mails in Nortehast India

http://www.mbaknol.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/rbi-mbaknol.jpgGuwahati, Jul 19 : The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has just detected several instances where people in the Northeast and Jharkhand have lost big money, courtesy fictitious offers of huge prize money via SMS or email.

Small wonder, the apex has decided to intervene and resolve matters forthwith. For the moment, it has directed banks operating in these states to look out for dubious transactions and expedite action against the offenders.

RBI’s regional director Surekha Marandi on Saturday said the problem of fictitious offers through SMS or email has taken on a huge dimension in the Northeast as account holders reside in remote locations.

The RBI regional office there has come across several instances. “These were from Assam, Nagaland and Mizoram. In one case, a person was duped of Rs 2.2 lakh and in another Rs 1.4 lakh,” she said.

Matters have come to a head in Jharkhand too. RBI general manager (Jharkhand circle) H N Panda said: “Such incidents have started pouring in. The RBI has received complaints of fraudulent communications via email or SMS relating to fictitious offers, lottery results and foreign currency remittances and employment to scholarship offers being perpetrated by some mischievous elements.”

These fictitious offers are made through a combination of emails or SMSes. Moreover, people indulging in such fraud issue false certificates, letters, circulars et all to befool the target. Often communcations are sent in the letter form of with a fictitious letter head that resembles the RBI.
