Labourers protest; block Assam-Meghalaya highway

Shillong, Jan 11 : Protesting labourers today blocked the Guwahati-Shillong road for several hours, bringing traffic to a standstill.

The labourers blocked the NH-40 under the banner of Shramik Krishak Kalyan Parishad (SKKP), demanding adequate security cover for migrant labourers working in the coal mines of Jaintia Hills district.

SKKP general secretary Pradip Kalita alleged that four labourers from Assam were kidnapped by tribal miscreants from a coal mine at Jowai on Thursday night.

The agitated labourers have threatened to move court for its direction to the Assam and Meghalaya governments ensuring their safety.

A Meghalaya Police spokesman, however, expressed ignorance about the incident. "We have not received any such report," he said.
