Chennai, Jan 26 : A special rehabilitation package has been announced for Manipuri children rescued from unregistered homes in Chennai and Kanyakumari districts. Besides, District Collectors across the State have been asked to conduct a thorough check of the children’s homes.

In a review meeting organised jointly here on Monday by the social welfare department, the department of social defence and the CBCID, the nodal agent for antitrafficking in the State, to discuss the status of Manipuri children, it was decided to get in touch with the parents of the children who were ill-treated at these unregistered homes.

Archana Ramasundaram, Additional Director General of Police, CB-CID, who attended the review meeting, told Express that a decision was taken to alert all District Collectors to review the status of children’s homes in their respective districts.

Dr P Rama Mohana Rao, principal secretary to the government, the social welfare department and Nirmala, Commissioner of the department of social defence, also participated in the meeting.

Kanyakumari and Chennai were part of a pilot project implemented under the anti-human trafficking initiative in the State.

In light of two instances of trafficking of Manipuri children, beside reports of such children found at two unregistered homes in Tirunelveli district, a special team comprising the SP, officials of social welfare department and NGOs have been asked to conduct check-ups in these three districts and submit a report at the earliest, said Ramasundaram, adding that a team had already begun its job in Tirunelveli.

She said efforts would be taken to establish a juvenile justice board and child welfare committee in the districts.

Apart from this, the CB-CID has proposed that a special court should be set up to deal with children’s issues.

Moreover, SPs in all districts have been asked to have a special review on juvenile cases and a training programme on anti-human trafficking for police officials in the TN police academy and on district and zonal levels in February.
